RFC3229 Feed Instante Maniuplation

The adoption of a new Instance Manipulation, as expressed in RFC3229 with Feeds, seems to be unnecessary.

Why can’t the existing diff algorithms work? Why must we have yet another one, let alone one that’s highly content-type sensitive? Won’t this just slow the adoption of RFC3229 ultamitely, as clients and servers only support certain algorithms and thus aren’t compatible?
